DOUBLE BAY SUBURB SPOTLIGHT

Double Bay is a harbourside eastern suburb of Sydney. Double Bay is located 4 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district and is the administrative centre of the local government area of the Municipality of Woollahra.

Double Bay takes its name from the bay situated on Sydney Harbour. It refers to the two geographical formations between Point Piper and Darling Point, which are interrupted by a miniature point in between. The eastern part is also known as Blackburn Cove.

A cosmopolitan, and particularly European feeling, hub of trendy café lifestyle and boutique shopping fashionably situated on the harbour with leafy green streets and parks, easy access to neighbouring suburbs such as Rose Bay, Edgecliff, Woollahra, Darling Point and Bellevue Hill. A pedestrian friendly centre with a number of pretty laneways, bars and restaurants Double Bay is a great place to explore on foot.

The home of Double Bay public school, Woollahra Council offices and library, the suburb also boasts a marvellous harbourside park – Steyne Park and ferry jetty as well as Red Leaf pool for a cooling dip on a hot day.

Double Bay developed early after initial European Settlement in 1788. In the early years of the colony, Double Bay was used as shelter for fishermen who would regularly fish around the harbour. Farming mostly cattle and lettuce the farm developed and by 1814 the farm had increased to envelop the valleys leading into the area currently known as Woollahra, Bondi Junction, Bellevue Hill, and Point Piper. site for a future Botanical Gardens was marked out by Governor Macquarie in 1821 but not proceeded with.

In 1834, Major Thomas Mitchell submitted a plan to Governor Darling for the area to be made into a village of 31 lots, bounded by present day Ocean Avenue, New South Head Road, Bay Street and the harbour - auctioned off in 1835.
