A beautiful beachside suburb in the local government area of Waverley Council, located just 2.5km south of Bondi Beach and 8km from Sydney's bustling CBD, with its iconic beach sitting on Nelson Bay surrounded by Bronte Park.
Bronte has an important surfing culture, with the Bronte surf life saving club being one of the oldest in the world founded in 1903. Similar to its neighbouring suburb Bondi Beach, Bronte is a popular tourist destination for picnics in the summer months along with a number of locals/tourists who take to the well-known track of the 'Bondi-to-Bronte' path each year particularly during the months of October - November to view the now famous 'Sculpture By The Sea' expedition.
In the early part of the nineteenth century, land in the eastern suburbs of Sydney was given to settlers as free grants. The free grants ceased in 1831 and in 1836 Mortimer Lewis, New South Wales Colonial Architect, became the first to purchase land at Nelson Bay, later known as Bronte.
In 1909 there were only 11 houses in the immediate vicinity of the beach. Although swimming in the surf had become popular, only four shops had been established. It wasn't until the 1970s that the 'Boom of Bronte' hit, this was the beginning of rising property prices. The upward spiral in prices in many cases meant some long-term residents took the opportunity to cash in and move, but for many of those who had grown up in Bronte this made it difficult to stay.
